Sea Island is the First U.S. Resort to Offer Cryotherapy

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Georgia, March 10, 2015 – Sea Island has added whole body cryotherapy (WBC), a popular sports recovery technique used in Europe and by professional athletes and A-list celebrities, to its extensive array of experiences. The practice, which is akin to taking a very short and extremely intense ice bath after a period of physical activity, is slowly but surely gaining popularity throughout the U.S. for its unique physical and mental benefits – like faster muscle recovery and exhilarating endorphin release.

Sea Island, a Forbes Five-Star resort on the beautiful coast of southeast Georgia, has announced the first resort-based WBC offering in the U.S. The cryotherapy unit, manufactured in Atlanta by Impact Cryotherapy, Inc., resides at the new Performance Therapy Center at The Lodge at Sea Island, an extension of The Spa at Sea Island. There, guests can combine cryotherapy with massage therapy for a comprehensive approach to muscle recovery after training or a round of golf.

“Whole body cryotherapy is the next step in the evolution of sports medicine and therapy. We’re excited to make it an integral part of our spa and fitness offerings at Sea Island and be the first resort in the U.S. to offer this specialized service,” said Ella Stimpson, director of The Spa at Sea Island. “We are committed to providing a 360-degree approach to preparation, performance and recovery for golfers and other athletes alike.”

During a 15-minute cryotherapy session at Sea Island, guests will receive a professional consultation and three minutes in the cryotherapy unit as temperatures get colder than Antarctica. In that time, nitrogen vapor fills the unit and cools the air around the body to a temperature of -220 degrees Fahrenheit. Gloves and slippers are provided, and the head remains outside the unit for the entire session. According to Impact Cryotherapy, “During the process, the cooled skin sends signals to the brain, which stimulates physical reactions and activates naturally occurring healing resources. WBC has proven to be a valuable adjunct for speeding muscle recovery and producing a general feeling of well-being.”

Regarding safety, Dr. Melvin Deese, an orthopedic surgeon with Summit Sports Medicine in Brunswick, Georgia, has minimal concern. “Cryotherapy is a safe and effective way to achieve anti-inflammatory effects and we’ve seen no adverse side effects after the fact. Sea Island is ahead of the curve when it comes to this offering, which I see becoming a regular part of professional and amateur sports in the U.S. over the next few years.”

Whole body cryotherapy at Sea Island is available to members and guests of Sea Island as of March 4, and the resort will offer packages for cryotherapy with massage therapy. For more information, visit seaisland.com or call 1-800-Sea-Island.
