Pinehurst Resort Planning to Open New Microbrewery in the Fall

Village of Pinehurst, South Carolina – On New Year’s Eve in 1895, the steam produced by the Village Power House enabled The Holly Inn to welcome the first guests to Pinehurst with the very latest in luxury amenities – heat and electricity.

For decades, the steam plant powered the homes, hotels and cottages of Pinehurst until it was shuttered in the 1990s, falling into disrepair and, at one time, slated for demolition. Now, after a full renovation by Pinehurst Resort to maintain its original façade and capture the character of the century-old building, the steam plant will re-emerge as the Pinehurst Brewing Company, which is planned to open this fall.

Much of the original steam plant building remains, but instead of turbines and generators, it will feature a 10-barrel microbrewery. An observation platform overlooking the brewhouse will be a focal point of the taproom, and the dining room will be complemented by a bar, a beer garden and an all-seasons patio.

The Pinehurst Brewing Company will operate in the historic building that still reflects its first use. Parts of the brewhouse’s walls remain blackened from the decades it housed massive steam boilers. The unique exterior brick corbeling – rarely seen in architecture today – is preserved, and the vintage arches and windows have been restored. Brick walls that have been standing for over 120 years give way to high ceilings, and the plant’s smokestack will be rebuilt using its original base, returning a lost but defining feature of the Village’s early landscape.

Portions of the plant have been renovated to include a smokehouse for the restaurant and a greenhouse for herbs, which could be used for both the restaurant and for brewing ingredients. A trellis designed to replicate the train track that brought coal into the plant covers seating outside. The trellis is supported by the same pylons that held the track in the early 1900s.

“For almost a century, the steam plant provided power to the Village. We hope this next incarnation of the building as the Pinehurst Brewing Company provides a surge of energy for the entire community,” says Pinehurst President Tom Pashley.

Beer will be brewed by Eric Mitchell, the former head brewer of Heist Brewery in Charlotte. One of the most highly regarded young brewers in the country, while at Heist Mitchell won recognition from the World Beer Cup and others. His IPA, Citraquench’l, consistently ranks among the Top 10 IPAs in the United States, and in February last year, fans braved the winter cold and camped out in line to be among the first to buy a new release of Mitchell’s bourbon barrel-aged stout, Cataclysm.

The brewery is among the most significant of recent additions to the Resort, which includes its new short course, The Cradle, and a redesign of Pinehurst No. 4 by noted golf architect Gil Hanse.

The Sea Pines Resort Opens Newly Renovated Fraser’s Tavern

Hilton Head, South Carolina The Sea Pines Resort has unveiled Fraser’s Tavern, a newly named and renovated eatery with a casual feel in the Plantation Golf Club.  Fraser’s Tavern replaces the Live Oak restaurant and is open daily to the public, resort guests, property owners, families and, of course, golfers who play the Heron Point and Atlantic Dunes courses.

According to Director of Food & Beverage Matt Roher, Fraser’s Tavern – open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. – has been redesigned with a new décor featuring six new television sets, expanded booths, leather furniture, and a dart board, all dramatically highlighted by floor-to-ceiling windows that provide 270-degree views.

“We’ve expanded the menu and price points to appeal to a wider audience, and yet still offer first-class food, just now in a more casual environment,” Roher said. “We wanted a more approachable, laid-back feel for not only our golf crowd but also for resorts guests and area residents. Anyone who dined at Live Oak (the former restaurant) knows what an incredibly beautiful building we have here at the Plantation Golf Club – now we believe we provide an atmosphere that better matches what our customers want.”

Breakfast is served from 7 to 11 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., happy hour from 4 to 6:30 p.m., and dinner from 4 to 9 p.m. Both indoor and outdoor seating are available.

The tavern-inspired menu includes a wide selection of entrees, sandwiches, pizzas, and salads made with locally-sourced ingredients. Adam Zensinger, Chef de Cuisine, said guests can expect first-class, fresh food and an innovative beverage menu.

“So much of what we serve here is made from scratch,” Zensinger said. “While the menu has changed and expanded in certain areas, the one thing that remains the same is the high quality of our food and how it’s presented.”

Zensinger said the most popular dishes at lunch continue to be the gumbo, three burger options, short rib cheesesteak, Southern fried chicken and five pizzas, all created with house-made dough.  Those items all are available on the dinner menu, joined by 16 diverse entrees, including shrimp and grits, pork shank, fried chicken, and Lowcountry fettuccini.

A wide selection of liquor, craft and bottled beers, and white and red wines also are available. For happy hour, Fraser’s Tavern offers five items each priced at $5, plus discounted alcoholic drinks. Golfers who bring in their scorecard after a round of golf at Heron Point or Atlantic Dunes will receive a $2 draft domestic beer.

“In addition to our golf crowd and resort guests, we really hope to welcome some of the Hilton Head locals and vacationing families staying here on the island,” Roher said. “They will find an inviting, beautiful atmosphere here at Fraser’s, and a menu that is appealing to everyone.”

Roher added the $6 gate fee will be reimbursed when dining at Fraser’s Tavern.

The restaurant is named after the Charles and Joe Fraser, the family of developers that created The Sea Pines Resort and built the Hilton Head Island community into the thriving destination it is today.

The Sea Pines Resort is also home to one of the crown jewels in the world of golf, Pete Dye’s classic Harbour Town Golf Links (home of the PGA TOUR’s RBC Heritage), located a short distance from the Plantation Golf Club, Heron Point, and Atlantic Dunes.

Pinehurst to open The Cradle

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA- Upon seeing the first golf course built in Pinehurst, founder James Walker Tufts was struck by how naturally the game fit into the landscape in front of him. “Golf experts and all those who cherish the hope of becoming such will find excellent opportunity to indulge in the game at Pinehurst,” Tufts remarked wistfully in 1898.

On September 30, nearly 120 years after golf arrived at Pinehurst, the historic resort will open The Cradle, a nine-hole short course that even the newest to the game can enjoy. Designed by golf architect Gil Hanse, The Cradle, at 789 yards, features holes ranging from 56 to 127 yards. Mere steps from the Resort Clubhouse, it is the same area where, in 1898, Dr. Leroy Culver carved the first nine holes out of the sand at Pinehurst. Over the next century, Pinehurst came to be referred to as the Cradle of American Golf.

“Pinehurst’s place in golf goes back almost as far as the time the game was first introduced in America,” says Pinehurst Owner and CEO Bob Dedman Jr. “As we embark on the latest era at Pinehurst, it’s symbolic that our newest course sits on the same ground as the original first holes of golf at Pinehurst. We look forward to watching players of all ages and all abilities enjoy golf at The Cradle.”

Hanse’s design incorporates the native sandscape and wiregrass common to the original courses of Pinehurst. With holes that meander along the rolling terrain, The Cradle’s greens subtly blend into the surrounding landscape and are protected by rough-hewn bunkers, all features that have long been hallmarks of Pinehurst golf.

“The beauty of golf at Pinehurst is that it is very natural, traditional and classic, especially architecturally,” says Hanse, whose restoration credits include projects at The Country Club, Los Angeles Country Club, Merion Golf Club and Oakland Hills Country Club as well as the original design work of The Olympic Golf Course in Brazil. “That Pinehurst character, we believe, permeates through The Cradle. These nine little golf holes are on a historic piece of land, and we feel like each hole has its own identity that fosters the creativity golfers have enjoyed here for more than a century.”

Greens fees for The Cradle are $50 this fall, and will vary seasonably. Kids 17 and under play free when accompanied by a paying adult, and resort guests may book tee times in advance. Public tee times are available 24 hours in advance. Tee times can be made by calling 1-800-ITS-GOLF.

Bordering The Cradle will be Pinehurst’s expanded putting course Thistle Dhu, which surrounds the Putter Boy statue. At 75,000 square feet, the new Thistle Dhu is four times larger than the original putting course built in 2012, with rolling hills and sweeping valleys sure to delight golfers of all kinds. Thistle Dhu, which will open in early October, will be free to play.

The Cradle logo features the Golf Lad, an iconic figure featured in original advertising for the resort and most recently used in the logo for the U.S. Opens and U.S. Amateur Championships at Pinehurst. In the Cradle logo, the Lad is shown resting comfortably in the nook of the letter “C”.

“Like the Putter Boy, who now overlooks play on The Cradle, the Golf Lad has been a lasting symbol of the genuine joy and passion for golf at Pinehurst since the game arrived,” says Pinehurst President Tom Pashley. “We hope golfers will share those same feelings on a short course designed to be fun and challenging while at the same time inspiring others to take up the game we all love.”

The opening of The Cradle and expansion of Thistle Dhu are two elements of a multiyear plan Pinehurst unveiled in November 2016. Following the successful opening of the Deuce, a new tavern overlooking the 18th hole of Pinehurst No. 2, Pinehurst announced it hired Hanse to build the short course and begin a redesign of Pinehurst No. 4. Hanse will break ground on the No. 4 redesign in October.

Gil Hanse Set to Bring Big Changes to Pinehurst Resort

Pinehurst Resort & Country Club today announced that Hanse Golf Design will redesign Pinehurst No. 4 and develop a short course as part of a master plan to further restore the original character and spirit to the Pinehurst golf experience.

Beginning this winter and unfolding in several stages over the next few years, the plan also includes restoring Donald Ross’ original characteristics to Pinehurst No. 1 and No. 3 while also enhancing Maniac Hill and Thistle Dhu.

“There’s a unique character at Pinehurst because of the landscape Donald Ross found when he arrived in 1900,” said Bob Dedman, Pinehurst Owner and CEO.  “Back then, he may have been a minimalist by necessity, but we’re making a choice to present our historic golf courses in a natural state similar to that era.”

Pinehurst’s migration toward more natural settings began with the highly-acclaimed 2011 restoration of Pinehurst No. 2, which took the course back to Ross’ vision. The success of that project, shown in the enthusiasm of guests and members, was influential in the decision to revive more original characteristics, while creating new elements reflective of Pinehurst’s origins.

“The overwhelmingly positive feedback we received from the work on No. 2 encouraged us to explore options that are a continuation of that effort,” Dedman said. “We think this is a thoughtful approach to the evolution of golf at Pinehurst, and we think Gil Hanse, with his timeless and natural design philosophy, is the right person for the project.”

The centerpiece of the plan will be Hanse’s complete redesign of No. 4. Hanse’s design and routing, which seeks to create a landscape similar to Pinehurst No. 2, will include exposed sand and native wire grass, wider fairways and natural topography. The project is scheduled to begin in fall 2017 with the course reopening in fall 2018.

“We think this approach will create a more authentic, visually interesting golf course and one that feels in tune with its unique surrounds,” said Hanse, whose portfolio of original designs includes The Olympic Golf Course in Brazil, and whose restoration projects include The Country Club, LA Country Club, Myopia Hunt Club, Merion Golf Club and Oakland Hills Country Club, among others. “A playable, artfully shaped and conceived golf course that derives its character and appearance from the traditional golf flavor of this region is what we aspire for in our approach to Pinehurst No. 4.”

Hanse also will design a short course on 10 acres of property currently occupied by the first holes on No. 3 and No. 5. A routing is currently being developed for the course that is expected to have 8-to-12 holes and feature many of the same slopes and contours that create multiple options and inspire creative play on No. 2. The project is scheduled to begin in summer 2017 and open in fall 2017.

“Fun and skill development are the most important concepts behind the short course,” said Tom Pashley, Pinehurst President and COO. “Whether you’re an avid amateur, a beginning golfer, or on an outing with golf buddies or family, the short course will offer an experience that can be enjoyed by all.”

In addition to the redesign of No. 4 and creation of a short course, No. 1 and No. 3 will eventually undergo restoration work designed to return elements of Ross’s original designs. The plan calls for changes to Maniac Hill, the country’s first driving range, that will infuse the natural elements associated with No. 2. It also includes moving and expanding Thistle Dhu, the putting course that has become a popular experience.

“While Pinehurst is the country’s most historic golf resort, we’re constantly evolving,” Dedman said. “The opening of the short course next fall, along with this summer’s opening of the Deuce brings a new level of energy and excitement to the Pinehurst experience.”

Pinehurst Resort and C.C. Opens New Bar and Restaurant

For decades, golfers and guests have gathered on the veranda overlooking the 18th green of famed Pinehurst No. 2. Now, they are able to do so in The Deuce, Pinehurst Resort and Country Club’s new bar and restaurant.

Featuring a bar area that opens onto the veranda, The Deuce offers the resort’s best view of No. 2’s historic finishing hole where the game’s greatest players have prevailed, including Payne Stewart, who won the 1999 U.S. Open with a dramatic 15-foot par putt there to beat Phil Mickelson.

The Deuce provides a setting like few in the world of golf.

“Even when you are sitting inside The Deuce, you are literally a ball-toss from the 18th green of Pinehurst No. 2,” says Pinehurst President Tom Pashley. “When the windows are open, you can hear the sounds of the game, whether it’s a roar for a made putt or the groans for one that just lipped out. You feel like you’re part of the event, whether in one of the seats on the veranda, or even sitting at the bar.”

Adorned with vintage photographs and other memorabilia illustrating the storied history of No. 2, the 5,000-square-foot Deuce serves lunch every day as well as an array of appetizers throughout the afternoon and evening. Lunch includes a variety of sliders, sandwiches and wraps while appetizers will include Crab Hushpuppy Beignets, Lobster Mac’n’Cheese Croquettes, Wings, Pretzel Bites and Loaded Tater Tots.

The bar, which is open to the public, features an assortment of specialty cocktails and North Carolina craft brews, including the Pinehurst Pale Ale, brewed specifically for Pinehurst by the Highlands Brewing Company, as well as selections from the nearby Southern Pines Brewing Company.

“It’s not just typical bar food,” Pinehurst Executive Chef Thierry Debailleul says. “It’s fresh, inventive and original food, and it all comes with a spectacular view. It’s made-from-scratch cuisine in a relaxed, comfortable setting that we feel will become the best lunch spot you can imagine anywhere.”

It’s the setting and the ambiance that set The Deuce apart. With large, custom-made windows designed to open onto the veranda, The Deuce is mere steps away from the 18th green. Pashley believes the bar and restaurant will enhance the Pinehurst experience, both for patrons and the golfers coming up 18.

“I think it’s going to lend a lot of drama as a player comes up 18 because the butterflies are going to begin to stir,” Pashley says. “If you make a putt you’re going to get a roar; you’re going to light up the place. But if you’re sitting in that front bunker and you’ve got to hit a shot to the back pin, now you’re thinking, ‘All of these people are watching me, and if I hit this thin…’ It’s going to make the final hole on No. 2 that much more dramatic.

“You hope to make the putt or hit the shot because you know you’re going to get a reaction. It puts you in the shoes of what it’s like to play in the U.S. Open. You’ve got a gallery, and it will make your finish that much more exciting.”

The Deuce is a fitting end to a memorable round.

“After shaking hands after your final putt, you’ll be able to walk a few steps to begin celebrating and recalling the round you just played,” Pashley says. “There’s never been that at Pinehurst, not in this way, where there is a place designed and built for you to celebrate the golf and good times you’re having at Pinehurst.”

Restoration of the Plantation Course Complete

The Plantation Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee reopens May 1 after a multi-phase restoration project to the award-winning design by architect Bob Cupp.  As a component of the comprehensive restoration a flexible short course routing has been added for golfers who want to carry only a few clubs and play only a few holes.

The first course built at Reynolds Lake Oconee, The Plantation Course opened in 1988 as part of the new community along the shoreline of Georgia’s second largest lake. Now one of six world-class golf courses at Reynolds Lake Oconee, the Plantation Course has been refreshed from tee to green.

Part of the Plantation Course renovation is the new “Quick Six”—a unique six-hole “course within the course” that offers a variety of tee box options while utilizing the existing greens on hole Nos.1-2-3 and Nos. 7-8-9. None of the “Quick Six” holes play longer than 130 yards, so a “round” will take approximately 60 minutes.

“We designed Quick Six to be fast, easy, and fun” said Mark Lammi, vice president of golf at Reynolds Lake Oconee. “We want golfers of all ages and skill levels to enjoy this wonderful game, and sometimes, an hour or so is just perfect. With Quick Six, they can play a few holes or more, if they want, and still have time to enjoy all the other things Reynolds has to offer.”

The updates and enhancements to the Plantation Course include:

Restoring all 18 greens to their original size and shape and replanting them with Penn A-1 bentgrass
Reshaping all tee box areas and adding forward tee boxes to seven holes
Removing 11 non-strategic bunkers while adding three new bunkers
Reshaping all the bunkers and installing the Billy Bunker system—to improve drainage and prevent erosion—previously implemented at two other Reynolds courses, National and The Landing
Enhancing overall growing conditions with selective pruning that increases air flow and sunlight
Rebuilding cart paths
Refreshing and reinforcing creek banks
Installation of nearly two miles of subsurface drainage
Enlarging the practice area
Adding nearly 10,000 ornamental grasses and plants

“Bob Cupp worked closely with our Vice President of Agronomy, Lane Singleton, to restore the course to its original character,” Lammi said. “The goal was to reanimate this terrific design in a way that could be efficiently maintained and also to give our guests and members, and first timers, an entirely new way to experience the game.”

“At 6,200 yards from the member tees, the Plantation Course is one of the most player-friendly golf courses at Reynolds,” Lammi said. “It complements the balance of our golf collection with great aesthetic value, as well as shot value.”

Reynolds Lake Oconee is a vibrant community of nearly 4,000 multi-generational families and their friends who share a passion for golf and the outdoors, while savoring their time together. Located along one of the most treasured lakeside settings in the country, Reynolds Lake Oconee has established itself as a leader in sports and leisure activities on land and water, as well as a cultural and culinary center with a passion for music, the arts, and regional cuisine.

Besides golf, Reynolds Lake Oconee features four marinas, the Lake Club wellness center, and an award-winning tennis center. Reynolds also has developed into a popular vacation destination, anchored by the The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee, a 251-room lakefront resort and spa, which was named a 2015 AAA Five Diamond Lodging and 2014 Forbes Four-Star resort.
